Equalities

Inclusivity is a founding principle of TKA, and equality will always be of the highest priority for us. This is reflected through our values of Community, Character, Ambition, and our focus on making sure every child feels that they truly belong here - a school where all can flourish.

Under the Equality Act 2010 (the Act) public bodies, including schools,  are required when carrying out their functions to have due regard to the need to:

  • eliminate discrimination and other conduct that is prohibited by the Act,

  • advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it,

  • foster good relations across all characteristics - between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it

The protected characteristics are:

  • Sex

  • Race

  • Disability

  • Religion or belief

  • Sexual orientation

  • Gender reassignment

  • Marriage and civil partnership

  • Pregnancy and maternity

  • Age (a relevant characteristic in considering duties in our role as an employer but not in relation to pupils).

Schools must publish information to demonstrate how they are advancing equality through compliance with the Public Sector Duty and the objectives they have set. The  published information must be updated annually and equality objectives published at least once every four years. You can access our Equalities Statement using the link below.

Website Accessibility Statement

Kingston Educational Trust is committed to making its websites accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This accessibility statement applies to the trust’s three websites: Kingston Educational Trust, Fern Hill Primary School and The Kingston Academy. We want as many people as possible to be able to use these websites.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How Accessible are the Websites

In order to check the accessibility of the websites we have completed a significant number of checks in accordance with government guidelines. In addition, Axe DevTools – a free browser extension recommended by the UK Government – was used to run scans across the three websites. These checks revealed the following issues:

1. Kingston Educational Trust

URL: https://kingstoneducationaltrust.org/
Issue: Insufficient colour contrast on the cookie consent button

  • Foreground: #ffffff
  • Background: #399ce3
  • Contrast ratio: 2.98:1 (Minimum required: 4.5:1)
  • Fix: Adjust background or text colour to meet minimum contrast for readability.

2. Fern Hill Primary School

URL: https://www.fernhillprimary.org/
Issue: Link element without discernible text

  • Element:
  • Issue: The link is missing accessible text (e.g., aria-label or title)
  • Impact: Serious (affects screen reader users and keyboard navigation)
  • Fix: Add aria-label="Close menu" or equivalent to describe its function.

3. The Kingston Academy

URL: https://www.thekingstonacademy.org/
Issue: Insufficient colour contrast on the cookie consent button

  • Foreground: #ffffff
  • Background: #39b449
  • Contrast ratio: 2.69:1 (Minimum required: 4.5:1)
  • Fix: Adjust colours to meet WCAG 2.2 AA contrast thresholds.

Whilst the websites are designed with accessibility in mind, there are a few minor issues that are currently being addressed.
